Frequently Asked Questions
Wireless Connection
If my Host Computer is connected to the IUM, will I still be able to access the internet?
Yes, since the IUM has dual Wi-Fi connection, you will be able to access the internet while you’re using your IUM. However, you will lose your internet connection upon connecting to the IUM. Since the Infinite Portal takes over the WiFi connection of your computer, you will not be able to connect to the internet using the method you are accustomed to. Instead you can connect to the internet by using the Infinite Portal.
How do I connect to the internet after connecting to the IUM?
If you were connected to the internet before enabling the IUM connection then the Infinite Portal will re-establish your internet connection automatically. If you’re using third party software other than the standard Windows WiFi software, you may have to configure your internet connection manually after connecting to the IUM. To do so simply go to the "Internet Connection" tab of the Infinite Portal and set up your internet connection accordingly.
Will my internet connection get disconnected when the IUM is unplugged from the client device?
If you are using the internet connection via the IUM and the IUM is removed from a client device then Internet Access is temporarily interrupted while your computer re-connects to your regular access point.
Can I still use the Internet connection setting on the Infinite Portal to access the internet even though my IUM is not connected?
No, the Internet connection settings on the Infinite Portal are active only when the IUM is in use. When the IUM is not connected, the Host Computer should connect directly to the internet.
What is the WiFi Range of the IUM?
The IUM range relies on 802.11 standards. This typically has a 30m indoor and 100m outdoor coverage, but this depends on the thickness of walls, objects between the IUM and the Host Computer, etc.
What is the speed of the data transfer? What does the speed depend on?
The transfer speed depends on your computer’s WiFi capabilities. If your computer has an 802.11b WiFi card, your maximum connection speed will be 11Mbps. If your WiFi card is 802.11g, then the maximum connection speed can be 54Mbps. If your WiFi uses the newer 802.11n standard, then you may be able to connect with speeds of up to 300Mbps depending on your card’s capabilities.
What happens when the WiFi performance is low?
If the WiFi Performance is low then your transfer speed reduces. In such cases you may experience really slow file transfer times or may not be able to play HD content. Try moving the Host Computer closer to the IUM and/or checking your connection speed (802.11b/g or n). An 802.11n connection will give you the best performance.
What happens when the WiFi connection drops?
The IUM will attempt reconnection to the Host Computer and automatically resume from where it left off. Most times this will be seamless to the user.
How do I improve the IUM’s speed?
If you are watching something which requires significant bandwidth (like HD content) ensure your Host Computer supports 802.11n for fastest performance. In addition, you can reduce the distance between the IUM and the Host Computer to improve performance or even disable the Internet connection to improve your overall bandwidth.
I’m watching a movie using the IUM and my friend is surfing the internet using the Host computer, does my viewing experience get affected?
In most cases there is no effect unless you are watching High Definition content or on a slow WiFi connection (802.11b). However, even so, if your friend is simply browsing the internet and not downloading content, your performance shouldn’t get affected.
The movie I am watching only requires a few mbps however Infinite Portal shows a lot more data being transferred. Why?
This is because the IUM is buffering content. If you have connection performance issues or connection drops, the buffering will ensure you have uninterrupted playback.
The connection to the Host computer dropped however I can still watch my movie. Why?
The IUM is equipped with a buffering system that works while you’re watching movies or listening to music. This buffer creates an added comfort measure in case your laptop’s wireless connection drops. This way you will have time to fix any issues with your wireless connection without losing your video or music feed. The buffer will allow you to watch up to several minutes of a standard definition video while you fix your wireless connection.
