Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is IUM?
IUM stands for Infinite USB Memory. It is the next generation of USB flash drives which looks and feels like a regular flash drive but has no physical memory limitations.
What is the difference between an ordinary flash drive and an IUM?
Most notably, the IUM provides infinite capacity. Because files are never actually stored on the IUM device, it can never run out of space. Instead the IUM attaches to a Host Computer and uses the host’s hard drive as its own. Files appear to be on the IUM but in reality they are always kept on the Host Computer. The end user however, will always think that the IUM is a traditional flash drive and use it simply as such.
What does it mean when you say "infinite storage"?
The term "infinite storage" means that there are no limitations to the amount of data you can share using the IUM. The IUM gives you the option to configure the size of the drive and therefore the amount of content you share has absolutely no limit. For example, if you have a server with 2 terabytes of information you can share this entire server and it would appear as if the IUM has the same size. You can also share as many servers as you want with as many files and folders.
What devices is the IUM compatible with?
The IUM is compatible with any USB equipped device which can read traditional flash drives.
What is the Infinite portal?
The Infinite Portal is an extremely intuitive application that gives you full control over the behaviour of your IUM. You can use it to set the maximum storage size of the IUM, to create your own file structure and to easily mark the files and folders that you want to make visible on the IUM. In addition, the Infinite Portal comes equipped with a set of performance monitoring tools that allow you to constantly check the connection state of the IUM as well as the transfer speed and throughput.
How do I install the Infinite Portal onto my computer?
The installation software is included on the IUM. Switch the IUM to the "Pair" position and connect it to the Host Computer. The installation software will start automatically and the Infinite Portal will be installed on the Host Computer.
What are the minimum specifications required to run the Infinite Portal on my computer?
Your Host Computer must meet the following minimum requirements:
Operating System: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
Processor: 1ghz
RAM: 1GB
Available Hard Drive Space: 1GB
WiFi Capabilities: IEEE 802.11b, g or n
USB Port: 1.1 or 2.0
What does the switch on the IUM do?
The switch toggles the IUM between the "Pair" mode and the "Infinite" mode.
What is pairing?
Pairing is the process of linking an IUM to a specific Host Computer. Once the pairing process is complete, the IUM will only work when that specific Host Computer is within range. It will not work with any other computer unless it’s paired to that computer.
How do I pair the IUM to my laptop?
Step 1: Position the switch on the side of the IUM to "Pair" mode
Step 2: Plug the IUM into your laptop’s USB port (it will auto install the Infinite Portal)
Step 3: Run the Infinite Portal and follow the instructions for pairing
Step 4: Enter the user defined parameters for pairing (you can leave the predefined parameters if you wish)
Step 5: Press the "Save" button
What is "Infinite" mode?
Once your IUM is paired with your laptop, you can remove it from the Host Computer and move the switch into "Infinite" mode. When the IUM is in "Infinite" mode, it can be used with any USB equipped device as if it were a traditional USB flash drive.
How do I get my files from my computer to appear on the IUM?
You need to share your files on the IUM by using the Infinite Portal. The simplest way is to drag and drop a file or folder onto the Infinite Portal. This will allow the file or folder to become immediately available in the root directory of the IUM Drive.
Do I need to have the IUM connected to my computer or any other device when sharing files?
No. You only need to connect the IUM to the Host Computer once during the pairing process. After that you can share files at any time by using the infinite portal. It doesn’t matter if the IUM isn’t plugged into another device since it will automatically update the file structure next time you connect it.
Do I have to be connected to the internet for my IUM to work?
No. The IUM connects directly to your computer and requires nothing in between. You only need an internet connection if you wish to browse the web while using the IUM. Otherwise no internet connection or Access Point is needed.
Will my IUM work if there is another IUM in the area?
Yes. Multiple IUMs can be used at the same time by multiple users since each IUM is uniquely paired to a different Host Computer.
What are the most common applications for the IUM?
The IUM can be used for anything, from watching movies on a DVD player to displaying presentations on a projector in the same way as you would use a traditional flash drive on the device.
