FAQs

So how does it work?
The Pocket TV is a small pocket-sized dongle that connects to the HDMI port of any regular TV (even your 5-year-old TV) and converts it into a Smart TV.

Basically attaching Pocket TV is like converting your TV into a WiFi Android tablet without affecting any other functions on the TV. It is essentially a fully functioning micro-computer in a USB stick running Android 4.0.

The processing power in the Pocket TV will allow you to display Android on your TV turning it into a mega-sized tablet. Using the on board wireless connection you can browse the web, download applications, chat on Facebook, update your Twitter status or just play games.

You can even attach a video camera to make Skype video-calls.

Why is it called Pocket TV?
Quite simply it is small enough to fit into your pocket so you can conveniently take it wherever you go.

Take it to your office, away when you travel, to a friend’s house or at home. Just disconnect and re-attach to another HDMI enabled screen and your can use the product. All you really need then is a WiFi connection to make full use of the product wherever you are.

Many meeting rooms will have an HD display or projector. No more laptops, just connect the Pocket TV, connect to the network and download your presentation from services such as Google Drive or Dropbox (or from the internal memory or microSD memory on the Pocket TV if you prefer)

Why would I want one and what can it do?
As Pocket TV uses the Android OS it is a very versatile product that can do pretty much anything an Android smartphone can do, apart from voice calls (unless you use WiFi services such as skype). This makes it much like many of the WiFi only versions of Android tablets available, only you can choose to use it with whatever screen is available to you.

Just some of the things you can do:

Web browsing – View your favourite web pages on a larger HD display.
Video streaming – Stream videos from the web including YouTube or play off the internal memory
Music playback: The Pocket TV even acts as a streaming device for music so you can play all of the content that’s on your computer or home network drive (NAS). That means you can access not only your downloaded music but also your movies, TV shows and even your holiday pictures right on your home entertainment system.
Gaming – Why wait for Angry Birds to come to Xbox360 or PS3 when you can play it on your Pocket TV? Or how about racing and strategy games? Wouldn’t they look better on your TV than on your phone?
Social Media – Twitter, Facebook, G , they are all possible on the Pocket TV.
News – Be it dedicated apps from CNN or BBC through to RSS feeds through apps like Flipboard or Google Currents.
Work – Edit documents, read PDFs, review PowerPoint, send and receive emails and even do video conferences.
Google Maps – So you won’t be taking the HD display with you but you can view maps on the big screen to plan and view potential routes.
Thousands more apps – The Google Play store is full of apps for all types of users and most of them work on the Pocket TV. Dropbox, Evernote, IMDB, ESPN… The list is endless.
So all of these are connected to your TV, just sit back and relax on the sofa.

How do you control it?

You can use the Air Remote which has a gyroscopic sensor that allows you to control your Pocket TV just by moving it around (like a Nintendo Wii controller). Move your hand up, down or sideways and the cursor on your screen will follow you. This makes your TV experience a lot more interactive and a whole lot more fun!

There is also a full QWERTY keyboard which you can use for text input so you can remain seated comfortably on the sofa at all times.

For the really tech savvy you can use your iPhone or Android smartphone to control the Pocket TV. Just download the Google Remote TV app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store and your phone will become your remote. There will also soon be a special Pocket TV app with added features!

What is inside?
The Pocket TV has a Cortex A9 processor with 1GHz of power and currently runs Android 4.0 (which works similarly to Apple’s iOS for you Apple fans!). It runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It uses the HDMI port for display and can be controlled with either a standard IR remote or the more interactive Air Remote. You can connect it to any standard TV set as long as it has a HDMI port and it will display up to 1080p resolution. It also has a USB port so you can attach an external hard drive, a wireless keyboard and mouse or a video camera for video calls. And on top of all these, it has a microSD card slot so you can add extra storage.
