Life As We Know It…

It’s been over a year since I graduated from university yet it seems like it was just a few months ago that I was a college student. University was great! Rushing to classes was optional and if it was too late to make it, we would spend endless hours doing absolutely nothing. Coffee breaks lasted for the duration of a class and lunches took even longer. Time management was a concept unknown as it seemed there was enough time to waste. Unmet deadlines didn’t have drastic affects because there was always an excuse good enough and always a way out. Yes, university was great but it had to come to an end.

On my first day of work, it took me less than 10 minutes to realize I was lost and had no idea what I was doing here. Rushing to work wasn’t optional but mandatory. I couldn’t spend endless hours being unproductive as there was no time to waste. Time management wasn’t hard because all the slacking at university taught me well how to work under pressure, multitask and meet deadlines. I couldn’t keep the ‘I don’t care attitude’ because I knew everything I did or didn’t do would affect Infinitec. It took me a while to settle down and get comfortable in the place I am now. I’ve learned how to be more responsible regarding my actions and their consequences. I’ve learned how to adjust my working style to what best fits the company and most of all; I’ve learned how to be a part of the company.

There’s a lot I’ve learned in the past 5 months I’ve worked here. Most of it however, doesn’t relate to what I learned in university. You only learn the basics from books; the theory doesn’t matter and is hardly ever applicable to what we do at work. Success isn’t easy for a new company regardless of what they’re trying to sell. It’s like reading a case study about a start up that’s trying to work its way up and the actions that it needs to take. The difference however, is that I am not analyzing a case; I am actually involved and I’m one of the people who need to take the action steps. Problems don’t get solved overnight and there is always something in the way, especially when you’re close to success. It’s true what they say, we all struggle, be it us human beings or a business entity. Nevertheless, the most important lesson I’ve learned at Infinitec is to keep moving forward because whether it’s our personal life or our work life – nothing comes easy and we all have to wake up and face our battles.
